Age Requirements/Swim Test

All swimmers under age 12 must pass a swim test before they can be in a Y pool area without direct adult supervision. The swim test consists of a 25-yard swim during which youth are asked to achieve the following:

Jump into the pool (in the shallow end), submerge fully, return to the surface and immediately begin swimming in a horizontal position on top of the water using a strong forward stroke on their stomach – arms must come out of the water – for 10 yards. Move to a vertical position, tread water for 30 seconds, return to a horizontal position and swim back to the wall using a strong forward stroke.

Children 7 and Under:

  • If a child has passed the swim test or is in a lifejacket, a parent or caregiver (age 16+) must be within visual and communication distance (6 feet) from the child and be able to easily reach the child.
  • If the child has not passed the swim test and is not in a life jacket, a parent or caregiver (age 16+) must be in a swimsuit within arms-reach of the child.

Children 8 – 12:

  • If a child has passed the swim test or is wearing a lifejacket, they may swim in any designated open swim area without parental supervision.
