Finding Her Spark at the Y

About 12 years ago, Peggy’s life took an unexpected turn when she contracted Lyme disease. During an eight-day hospital stay at UNM, she lost the use of her legs. “When they released me, I couldn’t walk on my own,” she recalled. Months of physical therapy, along with a wheelchair, walker, and cane, were necessary before she could walk independently again. Lyme disease also brought “brain fog” from short-term memory challenges and left her with arthritis, making everyday life a struggle for years.

Change came through a simple invitation. A neighbor invited Peggy to the YMCA using a guest pass. “This was the beginning of my Y life,” Peggy said. Encouraged by a close friend, she tried a cardio class and soon joined the Y herself. Starting with two visits a week, she gradually built a routine, adding yoga, strength and stability classes, Pound, and Strolling with Poles. With a little coaxing from friends, Peggy even completed the Riverfest 5K, celebrating the achievement despite finishing last.

Peggy realized she needed to strengthen her knees and focus on her health. She credits her instructors—Lea, Andrea, Nancy, Jaime, Maria, and others—for their guidance. A workshop at the Y with Dr. Raj helped her understand that “for each pound you lose, it’s like lifting 4 pounds off your knees,” motivating her to make sustainable changes.

That’s when Healthy Habits Coaching became a turning point. Under her coach Maria’s guidance, Peggy embraced mindful eating, adding more fiber and protein, exploring her large garden, and experimenting with new recipes. “Healthy Habits was the spark plug I needed to start my journey to a healthier lifestyle,” she said. Daily reminders and support from staff help keep her on track, and she has already lost 12 pounds.

Through the Y, Peggy has found friendship, encouragement, and a path to a healthier, more active life. She has learned to enjoy movement, savor her meals, and celebrate milestones—earning her Club 180 shirts for four consecutive years along the way!
