We are proud to offer American Red Cross swimming lessons at our YMCA at Pabst Farms branch. The American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim program stresses water safety skills and knowledge alongside swimming skills at every level. We offer two levels of Parent/ Child, three levels of Preschool, and five levels of Learn-to-Swim, Teen and Adult Lessons.

 

SWIM LESSONS

2022 Summer Session: June 12th - August 20th
 

Registration:

  • Y Members begins Wednesday, May 25th

Not sure where to start?

  • Swimmers will be told toward the end of the session which class we recommend for them to enroll in for the next session.
  • For swimmers who are new to our lessons, evaluations are available by appointment to assist you in selecting the proper level.

 


 

Parent/Child Swim Lessons

(6 months - 36 months) Parent and child are in the water together. Children are required to wear swim diapers under snug fitting suit if not toilet trained.

LEVEL 1

Purpose:

  • Familiarize children between the ages of 6 months and approximately 3 years with the water and teach swimming readiness skills
  • Provide safety information for parents and teach techniques parents can use to orient their children to the water
  • Prerequisites

No skill prerequisites:

  • Child must be at least 6 months old
  • Parent must accompany child to each class

Level 1 Newsletter

Level 2

Purpose:

  • Improve skills learned in Parent and Child Aquatics Level 1 and teach more advanced skills
  • Continue to build on water safety knowledge

Prerequisites:

  • Comfort level with skills taught in Parent and Child Aquatics Level 1
  • Parent must accompany child to each class

Preschool Swim Lessons

(Ages 3-5k)  Classes are taught without a parent in the water. Children must pass each level to move to the next level. Parents must stay in pool area during class.

Level 1

Purpose:

  • Familiarize children approximately 3 to 5 years old to the aquatic environment and help them acquire rudimentary basic aquatic skills
  • Help participants begin to develop positive attitudes and safe practices in and around water

Prerequisites:

  • No skill prerequisites
  • Children should be approximately 3 years old or older

Level 2

Purpose:

  • Build on and improve skills learned in Preschool Aquatics Level 1
  • Increase knowledge of water safety topics introduced in Preschool Aquatics Level 1

Prerequisites:

  •  Successful demonstration of the Preschool Aquatics Level 1 exit skills assessment

Level 2 Newsletter

Level 3

Purpose:

  • Increase proficiency and build on the basic aquatic skills learned in Preschool Aquatics Levels 1 and 2
  • Reinforce water safety concepts and skills introduced in earlier levels and introduce additional water safety topics

Prerequisites:

  • Successful demonstration of the Preschool Aquatics Level 2 exit skills assessment

Learn-to-Swim School Age Swim Lessons

(Grades 1-5)  Positive, fun activities that build athletic, social and interpersonal skills.

LEVEL 1 - INTRODUCTION TO WATER SKILLS

Purpose:

  • Orient participants to the aquatic environment and help them gain basic aquatic skills.
  • Help participants begin to develop positive attitudes and safe practices around water

Prerequisites:

  • No skill prerequisites
  • Participants usually start at about 6 years of age

LEVEL 2 - FUNDAMENTAL AQUATIC SKILLS

Purpose:

  • Build on the basic aquatic skills and water safety skills and concepts learned in Level 1

Prerequisites:

  • Successful demonstration of the Learn-to-Swim Level 1 exit skills assessment

LEVEL 3 - STROKE DEVELOPMENT

Purpose:

  • Build on the skills learned in Levels 1 and 2 to help participants achieve basic water competency in a pool environment

Prerequisites:

  • Successful demonstration of the Learn-to-Swim Level 2 exit skills assessment

LEVEL 4 - STROKE IMPROVEMENT

Purpose:

  • Improve participants' proficiency in performing the swimming strokes that were introduced in Level 3

Prerequisites:

  • Successful demonstration of the Learn-to-Swim Level 3 exit skills assessment

Level 4 Newsletter

LEVEL 5 - STROKE REFINEMENT

Purpose:

  • Help participants refine their performance of all six swimming strokes (i.e., front crawl, back crawl, butterfly, breaststroke, elementary backstroke and sidestroke)

Prerequisites:

  • Successful demonstration of the Learn-to-Swim Level 4 exit skills assessment

Private Swim Lessons

(Ages 3 through Adult)

  • Lessons are available in packages of 5, 10 or 15 half-hour lessons.
  • All lessons in a package are to be completed within six months of purchase.
  • Swim Package must be paid in full prior to scheduling with an Instructor.
  • It can take anywhere from 7-10 business days to be paired with an instructor.
  • In general, the more flexible your schedule the sooner you can get started. If you’re looking for a very specific day and time we may still be able to accommodate you, but it might take more time to find an instructor.  

5 Private Lessons: $125 Y Member • $200 Community Participant
5 Semi-Private Lessons: $75 Y Member • $120 Community Participant (each)

Pre-Team Swim Lessons

Interested in swim team, but not sure about the commitment? These pre-swim team lessons are a great place to start! Your child will train with an instructor/coach that has a swim team background for 45 minutes once or twice a week, focusing on the fundamentals of all 4 competitive strokes.

  • Prerequisites: participants must be able to swim 25 yards of front crawl with rotary breathing, 25 yards of back crawl, and be comfortable in deep water (10 feet).
