In a day and age when more than 2 in 10 adults (22%) say they always or often feel lonely, lack companionship or feel left out or isolate, with technology cited as a major contributor, the Y’s group fitness department offers a solution.

The group exercise classes at the Y are research based and our instructors have been certified and trained in each specialty. That means members who take classes will get a safe workout and get results. Class attendees experience increased levels of individual enjoyment, exertion and satisfaction as a result of group exercise. Being in a group positively influences the individual’s overall workout experience.

Attending group fitness classes may affect adherence in keeping with an exercise routine. Fellow participants become our friends in class because we share a common goal and can offer accountability and support. We want to connect with the instructor because we know he/she will help us do more than we would on our own. Over time, these group exercise experiences improve our quality of life.

For beginners to group exercise, it’s best to start slow. We advise newbies to come early and talk to the instructor. For the first class, plan to stay only for half of the class. Then each subsequent class you attend, stay a little longer until you have participated in the entire length of the class. Some of our classes are 30 or 45 minutes. These shorter ones are good to start with.

Whether you are new or have been coming to group exercise classes for years, participants enjoying the social aspect and get the results they want. And as a bonus, make a few new friends along the way.
