As the year unfolds and I look back at February, it will serve as a highlight of 2020 in Spiritual Development here at the Y.
We sent our first mission team to serve in Valparaiso, Chile as part of our commitment to our coalition partnership through the Y-USA. And the trip was incredible. Six team members spent ten days traveling and serving through the YMCA in Valparaiso, Chile. And for each team member, this was the first time taking a trip like this. We painted at the George Williams School, served meals to homeless individuals living on the streets, participated and loved on the summer camp children and visited the YMCA in Santiago. The team also received a nice amount of cultural immersion through a variety of activities scheduled throughout the week. But more than anything, lasting relationships were established with some wonderful people who call Chile home. And these relationships will last a lifetime. This team is ready to return to this beautiful place they have come to love.
This week, our third team from our Y will serve the children and staff at Esperanza Viva in Puebla, Mexico. A team of twelve have trained and given a lot of time and resources to be ready for this adventure. And having been there twice myself, I can just about guarantee it will be a life-changing experience for each of them.
Esperanza Viva is a youth home for nearly 100 children who have been rescued from the streets of Mexico and given a new home and the hope of a future. The ministry that EV provides is incredible and God is using the staff there to make a huge difference in the lives of children who have little hope of survival if it were not for the provisions He is giving them through this ministry. Our team will see all this first-hand and will be impacted much more than any impact we might provide in our week there. A week at EV is truly a life-changing experience.
Wow! February is packed with adventure! It will be a month our Y will not soon forget. But it doesn’t stop there. New adventures are on the horizon and maybe God will call you to go and serve through one or more of our international outreaches.
