As we make our way through the holiday season at what feels like the speed of a freight train, the New Year looms just ahead of us. The launch of another calendar year brings something different for all of us. For some, it’s simply another Wednesday morning and life will continue as usual. For others, it’s a symbolic opportunity to step into something new. It’s certainly a cliché, but I’m a big believer that the New Year can bring about a new you. It’s an opportunity to open up a new day planner and turn to an absolutely fresh page.
It’s not unusual for fitness to make its way to the top of our New Year’s resolution lists. Unfortunately, it’s also not unusual for those January first goals to fizzle out before winter’s end, or perhaps even sooner. In fact, by using activity tracking data, Strava, a social network for athletes, was able to pinpoint January 12th as the day that most first failed at their resolution fitness goal. With the numbers stacked against us, how exactly can we find success in our own goals this New Year? I would argue that perhaps our greatest key to success is taking the time to find our best fit within the community of members here at the YMCA at Pabst Farms.
Working out in community is partnered with a slew of benefits, like bettering our consistency, improving motivation and inspiration, lengthening the duration of our routines, and all around improving our chances at reaching our fitness goals. This is because fitness within a community comes with commitment. We’re less likely to skip or shorten our fitness session when we’re in it with a friend.
Consistency isn’t the only positive correlation to working out in a community setting; we are also more likely to push ourselves harder when exercising with a group. The Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology recently published a study that examined exercise performance both solo and with a friend. The study found that when participants were asked to hold a series of planks both alone and with a partner, planking duration increased significantly alongside a friend. Community can challenge us to take a step beyond what we thought was previously possible, whether that be holding a longer plank, stepping into a cycling class for a first time, trying out a new sport, or hopping into the pool.
Our YMCA is filled with a community of members who want to welcome you into your new year and into your new goals, and we want to help you find your fit here. I’d like to highlight just a few of our many group opportunities available to you right here at the Y:
Group Fitness: Our group fitness team is excited to kick off our 2020 year by offering 120 classes a week, ranging from yoga to barre to kickboxing and beyond. We also offer classes curated for our older active adults. Check out our online group fitness schedule for our full list of class offerings.
Personal Training: If the fitness studio might not be your thing, maybe a personal trainer may be more appropriate. Trainers will curate a workout just for you, and provide you with one-on-one attention and feedback to help you in achieving your fitness goals.
Small Group Training: If you’re looking for a sweet spot between group fitness and personal training, a small group training program may be just the thing. Our small group training programs, coached by our personal trainers, marry the motivation we get for a consistent group (usually 12 members or less) and the expertise we’re looking for in a personal trainer. Programs range from boxing, to circuit training, to barre programs and beyond.
Adult Sports: If you’re looking for a space to get active outside of our wellness center, one of our sports leagues might just be the place for you. Pick-up basketball takes place in our gym five times a week. Racquetball and pickleball leagues are also ongoing.
Aqua Fitness and Masters Swim: If you prefer water to land, groups meet in our pools daily. Masters swim programs will equip you with structured lap swim workouts and stroke correction. Aqua fitness classes are scheduled daily, varying in formats and intensity.
